World Men's Curling Championship 2012 - TB
April 6, 2012
Sweden won a surprisingly one-sided fourth-place tie-breaker, beating New Zealand by 10-2 in just seven ends on Friday at the World Men’s Curling Championship in Basel, Switzerland to keep their medal hopes alive.
With regular skip Niklas Edin still side-lined due to injury, the Swedish team’s regular third player Sebastian Kraupp took over skipping duties again for this game and Oskar Eriksson was in as second and vice skip once more.
The Swedes opened with a score of two in the first end and then stole a single point in the second end for a 3-0 lead. After that, the New Zealanders were chasing the game. Skip Peter de Boer blanked the third end but then gave up a steal of two in the fourth end to add to their woes. The New Zealanders finally got on the board with two points in the fifth end to go into the half-time break 2-5 down.
The Swedes blanked the sixth end and then the final blow for the New Zealanders came in the seventh end when the Swedes scored five. The New Zealand fairytale, which had seen them become the only team to beat Canada in the round-robin stage of the competition, came to an end and they conceded on a final score of 10-2.
Sweden now go on to face Norway in the Page 3 v 4 Play-off on Saturday morning, with the winner going onto to Saturday evening’s semi-final and the loser playing for bronze on Sunday.
